On Wednesday, August 13, we had our first Celebration of Poetry at Arthur Capper Senior Center, and it was a rousing success. Michael Ingram played MC while I played videographer. Seven poets shared their works, our five regulars plus three others, one of which was an impromptu performance of a poem by the Capper’s resident classical scholar who performed an ancient ballad from memory.

To be sure, the star of the evening was the Honorable Ms. Lois Tibbs, who throughout our workshops recalled classical poems from memory. For our celebration she read If by Rudyard Kipling to much applause. The other poets from our group were Ms. deLores McMillian, Mr. James Bennett, Ms. Armanda Taylor, and Ms. Betty Graham-House. dcmcmillian performed several of her original works, most memorably Please Read Between the Lines while Ms. House performed from her book of poems, Expressions from the Heart. Ms. Taylor share two works from her favorite poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar, while Mr. Bennett reached back into his memory to perform a tribute to the late Maya Angelou, a song she sang in the film Calypso Madness by Chuck Brown, entitled Run Joe.

An Open Mic followed during which several guests shared their poems with the audience.

We sure hope that you will attend our celebration at Sarah’s Circle later this month.

We are also in the final month of our fundraising campaign. We are within $900 of our goal. If you would like to contribute to Mementos click the donate button here. The mailing address is Sanctuary Theatre Inc, 2814 5th Street NE, Washington DC, 20017. All donations are tax deductible.

As always, we want to thank all those who have contributed to this project, to Poets & Writers for their support, and especially to the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities for their ongoing recognition of the value of this project.
